Georgia State Senator Colton Moore was taken into custody following an attempt to enter the Georgia Capitol, which was holding a joint session on Thursday. This comes after Moore was previously banned from the House Chamber over a year ago for making what were described as disparaging comments about the late House Speaker David Ralston.
As Moore tried to access the state House chamber amid a session that included Georgia Governor Brian Kemp’s speech, he was met with resistance by the Georgia State Patrol. They informed him that he was not permitted to proceed further due to his ongoing banishment.
“This is a joint session of the General Assembly. Your House rules do not apply,” Moore asserted defiantly, asserting his right to be present and adding, “I’m going into the chamber.” Despite his insistence, an official blocked his path, and the situation rapidly escalated. Officers eventually placed Moore in handcuffs and escorted him away to the Fulton County Jail, leaving questions about potential criminal charges unanswered at the moment

Flashback to March of last year when Moore publicly condemned a state Senate bill that proposed naming a building at the University of North Georgia after Ralston, who passed away in 2022. Moore’s harsh words were delivered even as some of Ralston’s family members listened. “This body is about to memorialize, in my opinion, one of the most corrupt Georgia leaders that we are ever going to see in my lifetime,” he declared during a particularly intense speech.

His remarks were met with strong opposition from Ralston’s successor, current state House Speaker Jon Burns of Newington, who labeled Moore’s comments as “some of the vilest that you can make about a good man” and subsequently ordered his removal from the chamber.
Moore has since argued that his ban does not pertain to a joint assembly session of the General Assembly, which prompted his attempted entry into the Capitol. During the incident, Moore was forcefully shoved to the ground before being arrested by the Georgia State Patrol. This physical altercation resulted in Moore visiting the hospital for an x-ray on his hand, which he alleges was injured during the push.
In response to the ordeal, Moore showed resilience, stating, “Thank you to all the patriots who have shown their support today. I have a Constitutional duty and will be back in the legislature tomorrow,” voicing his commitment to continue his legislative responsibilities despite the challenges he currently faces.
