Who Is This New American-Born Pope? Meet Leo XIV.

In a moment that will go down in Church history, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has been elected as Pope Leo XIV, making him the first American pope in the 2,000-year history of the Roman Catholic Church. His election was met with cheers, ringing bells, and joyful prayers from St. Peter’s Square to Chiclayo, Peru.

From Chicago to the Vatican

Born in Chicago, Illinois, on September 14, 1955, Pope Leo XIV brings a blend of American roots and international service to his new role. He graduated from Villanova University with a degree in mathematics before answering a higher calling by joining the Order of Saint Augustine. He later earned a Doctorate in Canon Law from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome.

A Life of Missionary Work and Leadership

In 1985, Prevost was sent to Peru as a missionary, where he served for nearly two decades. His work with local communities and priests in Chiclayo led to deep connections with the people and clergy there. Eventually, he was named bishop of Chiclayo, and in 2015, he became a Peruvian citizen, further strengthening his ties to Latin America.

Prevost also served two terms as Prior General of the Augustinians—one of the Church’s most respected religious orders, known for their emphasis on community life, humility, and service.

Pope Francis’s Trust and the Role of Bishop-Maker

In 2023, Pope Francis appointed Prevost as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, one of the most influential roles in the Vatican. As the head of this office, Prevost helped vet and appoint bishops around the world—shaping the global leadership of the Catholic Church. His appointment signaled Francis’s confidence in Prevost as a man of wisdom, discernment, and integrity.

A Pope of Peace, Humility, and Global Reach

Upon stepping onto the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Leo XIV greeted the world with the words: Peace be with you.” He spoke in Italian and Spanish, reflecting both his Roman roots and his long ministry in Peru. His first public message emphasized unity, peace, and dialogue, echoing his pastoral approach and deep concern for the faithful around the globe.

Fluent in English, Spanish, and Italian, Pope Leo XIV is known among his peers for his humility, calm demeanor, and joyful spirit. He often starts his day with early prayers and breakfast among fellow priests—a testament to his grounded leadership style.

What the Name “Leo” Means

Choosing the name Leo XIV connects him to a tradition of popes who emphasized modern engagement with the world. Pope Leo XIII, for example, issued a landmark encyclical on social justice and workers’ rights in the 19th century. In that spirit, Pope Leo XIV’s name may signal a similar concern for justice, community, and the Church’s role in a changing world.

What’s Next for Pope Leo XIV

His first appointments have been announced: a Mass with the cardinals, a Sunday blessing from the Basilica, and an audience with members of the media. All eyes now turn to how he will lead—not as an American pope, but as a pope for the entire world. His broad experience in Latin America, his leadership of the Augustinians, and his calm, pastoral presence are expected to shape a papacy rooted in compassion and outreach.

A Moment of Unity for Catholics Around the Globe

Whether in Chicago, Chiclayo, or Rome, Pope Leo XIV’s election is being celebrated as a moment of hope and unity. His life story bridges continents, languages, and cultures. More importantly, it reflects a ministry built not on prestige, but on service, faith, and community.
