A Voice of Dissent in the Studio
During Oprah Winfrey’s discussion of the Lindsay Clancy case, audience member Brittney said what many in the room did not want to hear: she believes Clancy is a murderer. Brittney said she supports mental-health awareness but could not understand how anyone could excuse the deaths of three innocent children. Her mother, Jocelyn, argued that Brittney had never given birth and could not understand the hormonal changes involved. Brittney did not back down. She pointed out that the children were not strangers and that their deaths were not instantaneous. Her objection was simple: compassion for a mental-health crisis should not erase the victims or the seriousness of what happened.
The Children and the Legal Case
Cora Clancy was 5, Dawson was 3, and baby Callan was 8 months old when their mother killed them in the basement of the family’s Duxbury, Massachusetts, home on January 24, 2023. The source reports that Lindsay Clancy strangled the children with exercise bands, then slashed herself and jumped from a second-story window. She is paralyzed from the waist down and has never disputed that she killed the children. A Massachusetts jury hung last week, and prosecutors say they will retry the case. The legal proceedings remain active, even as public discussion focuses heavily on Clancy’s mental state.
Oprah’s Sympathy-Focused Framing
The episode of The Oprah Podcast was titled The Lindsay Clancy Case, Understanding Postpartum Psychosis. Winfrey recorded the discussion in Massachusetts with experts, women who said they had experienced postpartum psychosis, and a studio audience focused on the mental-health angle. Dr. Kameelah Phillips argued that public concern should also extend to Black mothers who kill their children, pointing to differences in access, education, privilege, and race. She called for the same passion and support for women of color who are imprisoned for similar crimes. The conversation therefore moved beyond Clancy’s case and into a broader debate about mental illness, race, and unequal treatment.
The Mascot Argument
Brittney warned that Clancy was becoming a mascot for a movement, with supporters turning a horrific crime into a symbol of female mental-health advocacy. She was not arguing against awareness of postpartum psychosis. She was challenging the idea that understanding a possible mental-health crisis requires the public to set aside the children who died or stop asking hard questions about the act itself. That disagreement is the heart of the debate. Mental-health conditions deserve serious attention, but empathy does not have to mean forgetting the victims, softening the facts, or treating accountability as an outdated idea.

Oprah Brought together a bunch of crazy ass women to normalize what Lindsay Clancy did…
One young woman wasn’t buying it, and stood up amongst the crowd, and she brought the entire room to silence.
