Guilty Plea and Dropped Murder Charge

Mariah K. Thomas, 28, of Kansas City, Missouri, pleaded guilty to first-degree “endangering the welfare of a child resulting in death” after her infant daughter was found dead with burn injuries. Prosecutors dropped a first-degree murder charge as part of the plea agreement. Judge Sarah A. Castle sentenced Thomas to 13 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections, with no probation. The case had been scheduled for a murder trial in October, but the guilty plea changed that course and brought the matter to sentencing.

What Happened in Kansas City

Kansas City police were called to a home on February 9, 2024, after receiving a report that an infant could not breathe. A relative who rushed home reported smelling smoke and found the infant in her crib. He asked Thomas what had happened. Thomas said she thought she had put the baby in the crib, but had put her in the oven instead. Officers found the infant unresponsive with burn injuries, and firefighters pronounced her dead at the scene. The child, Za’Riah Mae Thomas, was about eight weeks old.

Prison Sentence and the Loss of a Child

Thomas has been held in the Jackson County jail since shortly after her arrest. The Daily Mail reported that her pretrial detention will count as time served, meaning she is likely to serve approximately 11 more years. Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said, “Our hearts are weighted by the loss of this precious life.” Baker added, “We trust the criminal justice system to respond appropriately to these awful circumstances.”
