What Federal Officials Alleged

The online jokes followed a serious federal case. Officials say Jonathan Kramer, 21, of Valencia, Pennsylvania, pledged allegiance to the Islamic State of Syria and planned an ISIS-inspired “mass casualty attack.” According to federal law enforcement officials, an FBI investigation thwarted the alleged plan. Kramer was arrested Saturday outside a hotel in Cranberry Township, about 25 miles north of Pittsburgh. Officials said he had a rifle, ammunition, and dozens of knives with him. The allegations describe a potential threat of mass violence, not a harmless online stunt.

At a Tuesday press conference, Richard Evanchec, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Pittsburgh field office, called the alleged plan an “imminent threat of violence inspired by ISIS.” Evanchec said Kramer demonstrated “a sustained devotion to the Islamic State of Syria” and recorded a pledge of allegiance. Officials also said he made efforts to spread the group’s propaganda and shared ways to kill in the name of a foreign terrorist organization. One reaction called the resemblance uncanny. The humor centered on the sketch’s resemblance to the familiar cartoon world, but the underlying allegation remains serious: federal officials say an FBI investigation stopped an alleged ISIS-inspired attack before it could happen.
