Who Was Robert Levinson?
Robert A. “Bob” Levinson was a retired FBI special agent who vanished on March 9, 2007, while on a business trip to Kish Island, Iran. He had left the FBI in 1998 and was working as a private investigator at the time. Over the years the U.S. government and his family fought to learn the truth about what happened to him. In March 2020 his family and the U.S. government declared him dead in absentia. For nearly two decades his disappearance became one of the starkest examples of Tehran’s willingness to kidnap and deceive.
What Tehran Did and What It Showed the World
The Iranian regime repeatedly denied any role in Levinson’s disappearance while simultaneously releasing disturbing proof of life materials. In 2010 they leaked a video and in 2011 they circulated photos of a gaunt Levinson in an orange jumpsuit, chained and clearly suffering. Those images were a cruel display of psychological warfare against an American family. Investigations and U.S. officials later concluded that senior Iranian intelligence officials authorized his abduction, detention, and probable death.
Family’s Statement After Khamenei’s Death
After the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei the Levinson family issued a blunt statement. They blamed Khamenei and the regime he led for the kidnapping and probable death of their father. They said his death does not erase the crimes committed or the long run of lies and obstruction from Tehran. The family praised President Donald Trump and Secretary Rubio for confronting Iran’s wrongful detention practices. They demanded Iran provide full accountability, return Levinson’s remains, and disclose the truth about his captivity and death.
U.S. Efforts and a Reward for Answers
The U.S. government kept the case alive. Rewards for Justice offered up to $20 million for information leading to Levinson’s location, recovery, or the identification and prosecution of those responsible. That reward reflects both the seriousness of the crime and the long list of unanswered questions. Intelligence assessments named two Iranian Ministry of Intelligence and Security officers, Mohammad Baseri and Ahmad Khazai, as allegedly involved in the abduction and probable death of Levinson.
Why This Matters to Every American
Levinson’s story is not just one family’s tragedy. It is a warning about a regime that kidnaps foreigners, lies to the world, and uses hostages as bargaining chips. When Iran denies responsibility while showing proof of life photos and videos it shows contempt for international norms and basic human decency. Holding the regime accountable is not revenge. It is necessary to prevent future crimes and to force Tehran to stop treating people as pawns.

For nearly 19 years, Iran has lied, obstructed, and refused to answer for the kidnapping, detention, and death of our father, Robert Levinson. He was taken by Iranian officials in 2007, held for…
