That sounds fair until you remember math and human nature. If Democrats run a bunch of candidates while Republicans concentrate on one or two, two Republicans could advance to the November runoff and leave Democrats off the ballot for governor entirely.
How the Jungle Primary Works
In the jungle primary, party labels matter less than raw votes. Voters pick their favorite among everyone on the ballot and the top two finishers go to the general election regardless of party. It was supposed to promote choice and moderation. Instead it can reward unity and strategy. When one side splinters and the other does not the unified side can win both slots even in states where it is the minority.

A recent Emerson College poll shows two Republican figures climbing to the top while several Democrats fight over smaller shares. The numbers put Republicans Steve Hilton and Chad Bianco ahead or neck and neck with Democrats like Eric Swalwell and Katie Porter. Those results do not guarantee anything but they do explain why some Democrats are urging candidates to step aside and why party leaders are sweating the calendar.
Why Democrats Are Struggling
The Democratic field looks crowded and unfocused. Multiple candidates with overlapping bases can create so called zombie campaigns that stay on the ballot long after they have no realistic path. That helps Republicans who avoid splitting their votes. Party leaders can ask candidates to drop out but that takes discipline and coordination some say the state party currently lacks.
What Comes Next
With the primary in June candidates and donors will make quick decisions. Some Democrats may bow out to consolidate the vote. Or the GOP could pull off a rare strategic victory in a deep blue state. Either way the outcome will show how much electoral mechanics and candidate discipline matter. California voters should pay attention because the rules decide winners just as much as the campaigns do.

Simple fix. The democrats can cheat early during the primary.
This sounds like good news!!! How Katie Porter is still standing is beyond my comprehension!! I would have thought that her numerous faux pas would have cooked her goose? And Fang Fang Swalwell is a national disgrace!! But California is a blue state bastion, and they love weak political figures and weirdos in the looney left state??? Hilton is the logical candidate, but does logic ever show up in CA????
