Video Shows the Pastor Taking the Neighbor to the Ground
Louisiana Pastor Tony Spell of Life Tabernacle Church in Baton Rouge was arrested Tuesday and charged with second-degree battery after a street fight with a 20-year-old man who lives across from the church. According to reports, the young man had been outside while Spell was working on a church bus when the confrontation turned physical. Video shows Spell moving toward the man, taking him down, and landing repeated punches before throwing the man’s phone into the street. The injured man was taken to the hospital and received stitches on his chin. That is one way to make a neighborhood dispute impossible to ignore, though it is also a fast trip to jail.
Spell Says the Man Threatened to Rape and Kill His Family
After bonding out, Spell went right back to his church and told members what he says led to the fight. He repeated claims that the neighbor told him, “I’m going to rape your wife. I’m going to rape your children, and the next time you’re out of town, I’m going to kill them. Now what are you going to do about it?” Church members also said the neighbor had bullied them and used racial slurs. Police, however, have said Spell’s claims have not been fully investigated, and officials told WAFB they had only received one incident report involving Spell’s family and the neighbors. In a time when common decency is already running on fumes, if these threats are accurate, they are disgusting and should be handled by law enforcement, not street justice.
He Told Congregants He ‘Laid Hands on the Sick’
Spell’s first service back after leaving East Baton Rouge Parish Prison made headlines of its own. Speaking from the pulpit, he framed the fight in biblical language and told congregants, “In my name, they shall lay hands on the sick. And they shall recover. So today, I fulfilled the scripture. I laid hands on the sick. I don’t know how much recovery they’re going to have, but I laid hands on the sick.” He also called the confrontation “domestic terrorism,” adding even more heat to an already ugly situation. The whole mess is a reminder that when threats, fear, and violence collide, someone usually ends up in handcuffs, stitches, or both.
