Is Violent Rhetoric Putting Trump At Risk?

The incident at Mar-a-Lago

A man armed with a shotgun and carrying a gas can tried to get into Mar-a-Lago and was confronted by Secret Service agents and a deputy from the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office. The agents shot the suspect after he attempted to force entry. Thankfully the president was not at the home that weekend and no family members were harmed, but this was another close call in a string of violent incidents aimed at President Donald Trump.

Lara Trump speaks out

On Fox & Friends Lara Trump laid blame at the feet of unchecked, violent rhetoric from Democrats who compare the president to Nazis and Hitler. She asked a simple question: if you keep calling for his political death in heated language, what do you expect will happen? She warned that luck runs out and that these words can inspire people to act.

Pattern of dangerous rhetoric

This is not an isolated point. Left wing voices and some media figures have used extreme language about President Donald Trump for years. Whether they mean to or not, comparing an opponent to historic monsters lowers the bar on violence in the public mind. It is not a stretch to say hostile words can help produce hostile actions. Americans should be able to debate without risking lives.

Why this matters to every voter

Free speech is vital, but speech has consequences. Leaders on both sides should call out language that could provoke violence and demand accountability when threats emerge. The security of public figures matters to the security of the republic. If political discourse becomes a match, someone will eventually light it. We should all want cooler heads to prevail.
