The family of 12-year-old Khimberly Zavaleta Chuquipa has filed a lawsuit against the Los Angeles Unified School District. They say the district ignored warnings about ongoing bullying and failed to keep students safe. The suit seeks accountability and demands better enforcement of anti bullying rules across campus.

What Happened That Day

On February 17 at Reseda Charter High School, Khimberly stepped in to defend her older sister during a confrontation. According to the family, another student threw a metal water bottle that struck Khimberly in the head. Doctors later found a brain bleed. After emergency surgery and days of treatment Khimberly died on February 25 at UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital.

Family Says Bullying Was Ongoing

The lawsuit claims Khimberly’s sister had been targeted repeatedly before the fatal attack. The family and their attorney say the same group of students had bullied and even injured other children before February 17. They say repeated requests for help to school officials produced little or no change.

Police Investigate as Homicide

The Los Angeles Police Department opened a homicide investigation after Khimberly’s death. LAPD has confirmed the probe but has not disclosed whether any suspect has been identified. Meanwhile the family continues to press for answers from both the district and law enforcement.

Video and Public Outcry

There is social media video circulating of a bullying incident that prompted the family’s legal team to look deeper into campus culture at Reseda High School. The family says the district refused to share details about what led to the deadly attack despite repeated requests. Parents and community members are demanding stronger protections for students.

What the Family Wants

The Zavaleta family wants justice for Khimberly and stronger anti bullying enforcement so no other child faces the same fate. Their attorney said school administrators cannot let fights erupt on campus without intervening. If the district did not act on clear warning signs the family says that failure cost a young life.
