In a stunning judicial overreach that directly undermines both the rule of law and the humanitarian goal of family reunification, a federal judge appointed by Joe Biden has interceded to block the Trump administration’s lawful efforts to return unaccompanied migrant children to their families in Guatemala. District Court Judge Sparkle Sooknanan issued a temporary restraining order (TRO) on Sunday, “blocking any deportations of unaccompanied children from Guatemala and in U.S. custody who did not have a deportation order,” as reported by CBS News. This decision represents a blatant attempt by the judicial branch to obstruct the executive branch’s constitutional duty to enforce the nation’s immigration laws and protect its borders.
This judicial obstruction came after the judge had initially issued a narrower TRO early Sunday, “barring officials from sending a group of 10 migrant children between the ages of 10 and 17 to Guatemala, granting a request from attorneys who alleged the effort would skirt legal protections Congress established.” The order was expanded dramatically following a hearing, showcasing a judicial process that is more interested in political theater than in the well-being of the children involved. During the proceedings, Judge Sooknanan instructed Drew Ensign, the Justice Department lawyer representing the Trump administration, to “inform officials they had to halt their deportation plans.”

He acknowledged that deportation planes had been prepared but were grounded, and he clarified the administration’s true objective: to safely “repatriate” the children to Guatemala to be reunited with their families. This stands in direct opposition to the narrative pushed by activist attorneys, who falsely claimed the Trump administration was attempting to deport “more than 600 minors to Guatemala without allowing them to request humanitarian protection.” The administration’s plan was, in fact, the most humanitarian course of action—safely returning children to their parents.
The heart of this matter was perfectly articulated by Trump deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, who cut through the left’s disinformation campaign. This entire episode is a direct result of the catastrophic border policies of the previous Biden administration, which created incentives for human smugglers to separate children from their families and send them on a dangerous journey north. Now, the Trump administration is working diligently to clean up that mess by reuniting these children with their loved ones, only to be blocked by an activist judge. The media’s framing of this responsible repatriation effort as a cruel deportation is a gross mischaracterization designed to score political points against a president who is actually solving problems.
I feel sorry for these kids. Their parents and i use this word loosely, sent their kids 1000s of miles, to America on their own except for the drug traffickers and the pedophiles using them.
