Because now, after a federal housing watchdog sends a criminal referral accusing Schiff of falsifying loan documents to score better mortgage rates on his Maryland mansion while double-dipping on California tax breaks, we’re supposed to believe this is just a paperwork mix-up. Must be nice to have a “clerical error” that saves you hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Two Houses, One Problem: Honesty
According to the referral, Schiff told the banks his Maryland home was his “primary residence” to lock in better terms from 2003 through 2019. Meanwhile, on California tax forms, that same period he claimed his Burbank condo as his “primary residence” to grab a homeowner’s exemption. Two properties. Two different “primary” homes. Apparently, math—and honesty—are optional when you’re a career swamp creature.
Schiff’s Excuse: They Knew, So It’s Fine
What’s the Schiff defense? His office claims the lenders “knew” about his congressional lifestyle and his “intended year-round use” of both homes. Translation: I told them I’m important, so they let me slide. That’s not a denial. That’s Beltway-speak for “Yeah, I did it, but I’m special.” Try that excuse with your mortgage company and see how fast they put a padlock on your door.
Why Nothing Will Happen
Here’s why this will go nowhere: liberal jury pools, the statute of limitations, and a Justice Department that wouldn’t prosecute Schiff if they caught him stuffing cash into a freezer. Even if the evidence is airtight, they’ll say “we need more information” until everyone forgets. If you or I did this? Orange jumpsuit. Schiff? A slap on the wrist and a new MSNBC contract.

Schiff spent years demanding Trump be thrown in prison over alleged misstatements on loan paperwork. Now that the roles are reversed? Suddenly intent, definitions, and “context” matter.
