Hillary Clinton sat down with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria and decided Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension was proof of “government intimidation” and an attack on free speech. The same Hillary who cheered on Big Tech when they throttled conservative voices now wants us to believe she’s the patron saint of satire. Spoiler alert: she’s not defending free speech, she’s defending one of her Hollywood pals who happened to be hemorrhaging viewers anyway.
What Kimmel Actually Said
Let’s put the cards on the table. On his September 15th monologue, Jimmy Kimmel mocked conservatives in the wake of Charlie Kirk’s tragic murder. He sneered, “The MAGA gang [is] desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them, and doing everything they can to score political points from it.” He even compared President Trump’s grief to “a four-year-old mourning a goldfish.” But here’s the problem: by that point it was already well known the shooter wasn’t a MAGA supporter. Kimmel didn’t care—he ran with the narrative anyway. That wasn’t edgy satire. That was lazy, spiteful commentary dressed up as comedy.
Free Speech Doesn’t Mean a Free Job
Let’s get one thing straight: free speech protects you from the government throwing you in jail for your words—it doesn’t guarantee you a cushy job hosting a late-night show no one watches. Kimmel wasn’t “silenced by the state.” He was canned by a company tired of his lousy ratings and his sanctimonious comedy routine that was less funny than a Kamala Harris word salad. We all have freedom of speech. And when we use that freedom to forcefully show we are filled with hate, or are willing to tell lies to make political points (i.e. ‘trying to make them think the killer was not MAGA), we have the right to decide we don’t want them at our workplace or in our homes.
