Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) Thinks The Moon Is Made of Gas: Watch This Stunning Display of Ignorance!

In an era where the truth is often under scrutiny, the importance of accurate information, especially from our leaders, cannot be overstated. However, a recent display of incomprehensible ignorance by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, has left many dumbfounded, questioning the caliber of knowledge of those at the helm of shaping U.S. policies and laws. Addressing a group of high school students in Houston before a solar eclipse, Jackson Lee made the astonishing claim that the moon is a “planet” composed “mostly of gases.” This isn’t just a minor slip; it’s a glaring exhibit of ignorance, especially coming from someone who once led the House Science Committee’s space subcommittee.

Ignorance on Display

The blunder by Jackson Lee isn’t a mere oversight; it’s a shocking display of incompetence. The moon, known to any middle school student, is neither a planet nor made up of gas but is Earth’s solid, rocky satellite. That such a fundamental scientific fact eluded a congresswoman, particularly one with past responsibilities related to space policy, is bewildering and unacceptable. It throws into stark relief the worrying reality of the level of understanding some of our lawmakers possess about basic scientific facts.

The attempt by Jackson Lee to backtrack and clarify her statements on social media, claiming a mix-up between the sun and the moon, did little to quell the astonishment. It instead fueled further disbelief and mockery. How could someone, who once had a say in the nation’s space and science decisions, make such an elementary error?

The Gravitas of Misinformation

The implications of Jackson Lee’s statements go beyond mere public embarrassment. Her role as a speaker before young, impressionable students, presumably to enlighten them ahead of an astronomical event, turned into an opportunity to spread misinformation. This incident isn’t just about a mistaken fact; it’s about a person in a position of power carelessly misguiding the youth. The scenario begs the question: If such basic scientific facts are misrepresented by our leaders, what confidence can the public have in their decisions and policies, particularly those related to science and education?

A Critical Examination

Jackson Lee’s error calls for a critical examination of the qualifications and knowledge base of individuals appointed to significant positions, especially in committees as crucial as the Science, Space, and Technology Committee. It’s alarming that someone who influences laws and policies could display such a profound lack of understanding of elementary science. This incident should not be brushed aside as a simple slip of the tongue but seen as a symptom of a larger issue—the need for our representatives to be better informed and educated, especially on matters they are directly involved in legislating.

Final Thoughts

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee’s mischaracterization of the moon is not just a faux pas; it is a glaring indictment of the level of expertise we have come to accept from our lawmakers. It’s a wake-up call for a critical reassessment of the criteria by which we select those tasked with making decisions on our behalf, especially in areas as critical as science and technology. This episode should serve as a cautionary tale, prompting us to demand higher standards of knowledge and accountability from our elected officials. When it comes to the individuals elected to represent us and make decisions affecting the future of our nation, ignorance is not bliss; it’s a danger.

Well, I guess we’ll all just sink into the moon’s centre if we land there. Notwithstanding her gaffe regarding the sun – (sic) “and it’s almost impossible to go near the sun”. What if we try really hard, using lashings of SPF 1000?

On the bright side, at least she didn’t think Guam was going to capsize, said in the past by Congressman Hank Johnson.

hahaha – I remember old Hanks diatribe on the island capsizing… hard to believe he’s still in congress. Another genius.

Good point. Hank Johnson (Dem. Georgia) is hard to beat in the stupid Department. Thinking the island of Gam would tip over if we put to many troops on one end is a classic enlightenment in what is being elected in American politics. As to Jackson Lee, the only thing worse are the voters who keep re-electing these ignorant gasbags.

Please DO NOT use the word “ignorance” where the word “stupidity” is far more appropriate. A 5 year old is ignorant, that is perfectly normal and is rectified with a bit of education. When a person reaches this stage of life and has a position in government that should assume that she is educated to the level of knowing that we did not land on Mars and that the Moon is not made of gasses and emitting energy yet still makes those declarations………She is completely, totally, utterly, hopelessly, irrevocably, democratically stupid to a mathmatic level that should be on a university Math Department blackboard for all to ponder.

Nothing says “stupid” quite like “Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas.” Hank Johnson comes close, and at least he is funny..

She also thought that the US had slaves for 400 years. She was one loony woman. Thankfully, she had her appointed judgment day this year on July 19 and I’m pretty sure where she is now is much hotter than Texas.
