Ian Bassin Lays Out the Exercise
Far-left activist Ian Bassin appeared this week on “The Court of History,” where he described a set of election-related “wargames” meant to walk through possible scenarios before the midterm elections. Bassin, the co-founder and executive director of Protect Democracy, said participants were assigned roles, with some people playing themselves and others stepping into key positions across government, media, civil society, and online influence circles. If that sounds like political theater with a law degree, well, Washington has never been known for underacting.
Who Was Playing Which Role
In the exchange, Sidney Blumenthal asked Bassin to explain who the actors were and what roles they took. Bassin said the roles included congressional leadership, administration leadership, the Attorney General, the Director of National Intelligence, the Secretary of Homeland Security, nonprofit litigators, governors, secretaries of state in key states, major online influencers, and even foreign actors such as Russia or Iran. He said participants also played entities like the FCC and ABC News so the group could see how the different parts of the system might interact during a tense election fight.
Big Names in the Room
Bassin said the exercise included people who work on election protection or are considered experts in that area. He named Norm Eisen, Marc Elias, Vanita Gupta, and Sky Perryman among those participating, along with others. According to Bassin, participants were encouraged to “get into character,” including if they were playing a conspiracy-minded online influencer or an acting director of national intelligence. That is quite a cast list, and not exactly the church bake sale committee.
Jeff Clark Shares the Clip
Attorney Jeff Clark posted the video clip on X on August 27, 2026, describing the effort as a large number of wargames aimed at helping the Left take over Congress in January 2027. The original article also noted that Bassin leads Protect Democracy, a nonprofit founded in 2017 that says it works to safeguard U.S. elections and counter disinformation. The Gateway Pundit has criticized the group sharply and stated that it was previously sued by Protect Democracy.

Why Conservatives Are Paying Attention
The concern here is not that political players prepare for elections. Both sides run models, plan legal strategies, and study likely pressure points. The concern is the scale and style of what Bassin described, with legal activists, government-role players, media-role players, online-influence roles, and foreign-actor scenarios all being gamed out before voters even finish deciding who they want in charge. For conservatives, this is another reminder that the Left is organized, lawyered up, and thinking several moves ahead, which means the Right cannot afford to sleepwalk into another election season while the other side rehearses the whole production.
