England captain Harry Kane gave reporters a fun little sports-world crossover this week when he confirmed that he played golf with President Donald Trump about 18 months ago in Palm Beach, Florida. Kane, now with Bayern Munich, said Trump invited him to play while he was in town, and he called the whole thing a “pretty surreal experience.” That is probably fair. One day you are preparing for elite soccer, the next you are teeing it up with a president who treats a golf course like a second Oval Office. Kane said he was grateful for the invite and sounded relaxed about the whole meeting, which will surely annoy the usual crowd that believes speaking kindly about Trump is some kind of national emergency.
Kane Says Trump Can Still Swing It
Kane did not just say the round was memorable. He also gave Trump credit for his golf game, saying it was “pretty good” and adding that he hopes he can play that well when he reaches Trump’s age. Trump is 80, which makes the praise a little more interesting. Plenty of politicians talk a big game. Trump, apparently, can still take it to the course and earn a compliment from one of the biggest names in world soccer. Kane did not make it political. He simply answered the question, gave the man credit, and moved on. Imagine that, adults having a normal interaction without needing a cable-news therapy session.

Trump Returns The Compliment
Trump had already spoken warmly about Kane earlier in the week, saying, “I think Kane is a great player. I played golf with him and I like him a lot. He’s a good golfer too. He’s really great.” That is classic Trump, direct praise with no committee-approved word salad attached. After England’s 3-2 World Cup win over Mexico, Trump also posted on Truth Social, “Harry Kane of England is a GREAT player!!!” Kane has backed that up on the field, scoring six goals during the tournament against teams including Croatia, Panama, DR Congo, and Mexico. England now heads into a World Cup quarter-final matchup with Norway, with Kane leading the way.
