WATCH: FCC Chair Brendan Carr Posts ‘The View’ Montage of Hosts Campaigning for Democrats [VIDEO]

Disney Wants The View Treated Like News

ABC News and Disney are making a bold claim to the FCC: The View is a “bona fide news program.” That matters because federal political equal-time rules treat real news programming differently from entertainment or partisan talk. Disney argues the show’s booking and content choices are based on “newsworthiness,” not partisan aims. Anyone who has watched five minutes of the table chatter may need a strong cup of coffee before buying that one. The daytime program has long been known for harsh anti-Republican commentary, especially when the subject is President Trump or conservative voters.

Carr Posts The Video Receipt

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr responded by posting a montage on X showing clips from The View that appear to feature the hosts praising Democrats, urging political outcomes, and attacking Republicans. Carr wrote that Disney is arguing the show qualifies as bona fide news and that the FCC will make its decision based on “all relevant evidence and precedents.” In other words, the agency is not supposed to grade the show by vibes, applause lines, or Joy Behar’s facial expressions. It must look at the law, the record, and how similar cases have been handled before.

The Equal-Time Fight Has Real Stakes

This is not just another media food fight, though Washington never misses a chance to serve one with extra gravy. If The View is treated as bona fide news, Disney may have more room to avoid equal-time obligations that could apply to political advocacy or candidate-related programming. If it is not, the network may face tighter rules on how political content is handled. Carr has also said he does not see the FCC as the “speech police,” and that his role is to apply laws passed by Congress. That is an important point. The question is not whether the hosts are allowed to be liberal. They clearly are. The question is whether a program that often sounds like a Democratic campaign green room should receive the same regulatory treatment as a straight news broadcast.

ABC’s Credibility Problem Is Bigger Than One Clip

The View has repeatedly drawn attention for partisan commentary and on-air corrections, which makes Disney’s “just news” argument a tough sell to many viewers. Conservatives have complained for years that major networks dress opinion up as journalism, then act shocked when Americans notice the costume. Carr’s video gives the public a chance to see the issue for itself, without needing a media studies degree or a decoder ring from ABC headquarters. If Disney wants the benefits of being treated like news, it may have to explain why this program so often looks, sounds, and votes like something else.
