A Win For Ballot Tracking

The Trump administration and the U.S. Postal Service just picked up an important court victory in the fight over mail-in ballot oversight. According to reporting cited in the case, the D.C. Circuit found that USPS made a “strong showing” that it would likely succeed in defending a new rule tied to federal election mail. The policy would require states to give USPS approved mail-voter lists and use uniquely serialized barcodes on ballot envelopes so ballots can be tracked going out and coming back. Imagine that, a government agency wanting a list before handling ballots. Somewhere, a bureaucrat probably spilled his oat milk latte.

What The Rule Would Require

The rule comes after President Donald Trump’s March 31 executive order directing federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice, to help compile lists of confirmed U.S. citizens who are legal voters in each state. The order also directed USPS to deliver ballots only to voters on each state’s approved mail-in ballot list, with the Postal Service expected to propose a final rule by Aug. 3. Supporters say this is basic election security, not rocket science. If a package from an online store can be tracked from a warehouse to your porch, Americans have every right to ask why ballots should be treated with less care.

The NAACP Challenge Falls Short

The NAACP sued over the Trump administration’s requirement, but the appeals court was not persuaded at this stage. The court said the challenge was not ripe for review and found the policy was not blocked by a prior NAACP settlement. The panel also warned that USPS could suffer “irreparable harm” if it could not finalize and implement the rule before the November midterm elections. That matters because election rules are not supposed to be sorted out at the last minute like a teenager doing homework in the car on the way to school.

Another Legal Hurdle Remains

This is not the final word. The administration still faces a separate lawsuit where U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani sided with Democrat-led states that argued the Postal Service rule could interfere with state control of elections. The lawsuits were brought on different legal grounds, and Judge Emmet Sullivan’s pause on the USPS rule remains in place for now. So yes, this is a real win, but not a full green light yet. The bigger issue is simple: voters deserve a system where legal ballots are protected, illegal votes are blocked, and every side can trust the count without being told to sit down and stop asking obvious questions.
