But according to Fox News, she is now making a more direct legal move against author Michael Wolff, asking a federal court on Tuesday to impose sanctions after his lawsuit against her was thrown out. Wolff is known for writing several highly critical books about President Donald Trump, but this fight centers on claims tying Melania Trump to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Melania has denied having any close relationship with Epstein, who died in 2019, and her legal team has treated the matter as serious, not just another round of political mud-slinging dressed up as commentary.

Wolff’s Preemptive Lawsuit Did Not Impress the Judge

Before Melania sued Wolff for defamation, her team reportedly sent him a pre-action notice identifying statements they viewed as defamatory and demanding a retraction and apology. Rather than taking that route, Wolff filed his own lawsuit first, claiming he was trying to stop Melania from suing him for $1 billion over the disputed allegations. That legal maneuver did not go far. Earlier this year, a federal judge tossed Wolff’s case, calling it a “contorted” effort and saying it was “not how the federal courts work.” In plain English, the court was not buying the idea that someone can sprint to federal court to block a possible defamation case and then call it a noble defense of free speech. Melania’s Lawyers Say the Case Became a Political Spectacle

Melania Trump’s attorneys are now arguing that Wolff and his legal team should pay for the costs she incurred responding to what they describe as an abusive legal filing. In their motion, they said Wolff turned a serious matter into “a fundraising drive and a political spectacle.” They also wrote, “Plaintiff and his counsel asserted a legally frivolous claim, propped it up with factual contentions that lacked any evidentiary support, and used them to run a political and commercial campaign.” Her team added that Wolff and his counsel “should pay for Mrs. Trump’s fees and expenses incurred for the process they abused.” That is a sharp accusation, and it aims beyond the normal political back-and-forth. The sanctions request is not asking the judge to decide whether Wolff’s statements were defamatory. Instead, it focuses on how the dismissed federal case was filed and used.

The Sanctions Request Targets Alleged Bad-Faith Tactics

Melania’s legal team also accused Wolff of using the lawsuit to harass her in public, calling it “patently meritless” and pointing to the court’s prior findings about how the action was presented. Their filing says the requested sanctions are based on “unsupported and mischaracterized federal submissions,” improper purposes, unnecessary multiplication of the proceedings, and what they described as “textbook bad-faith forum-shopping.” That is lawyer language, but the meaning is simple enough: they believe Wolff used the court system as a stage, not as a proper legal forum. For a public figure who often stays above the daily media food fight, Melania Trump’s latest move shows there are some accusations she is not willing to let slide quietly into the noise machine.
