A Public Fight Over Starlink
The dispute began after Starlink service was interrupted in Ukraine earlier this month. Starlink is controlled by Musk’s SpaceX, and Musk said Ukrainian forces were using the civilian service for offensive operations against Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky responded sharply, calling the interruption a “big mistake” that would lead to “a lot of losses.” He also warned, “People will die if attacks continue and if Starlink will not work.” That was not exactly a quiet customer service complaint. Zelensky was arguing that the service interruption could carry serious consequences on the battlefield.
Musk Says the Rules Were Clear
Musk answered on X with a direct explanation of his position. He said using Starlink, a civilian commercial service, for offensive drone strikes to kill people “has never been allowed, nor should it be.” Musk said the Ukrainian military violated Starlink’s terms of service and used it for offensive drone strikes. He added that the loophole was closed the previous week. Musk also drew a line between Starlink and Starshield, saying Starshield is a different system controlled by the U.S. government, which can decide how that system is used. War may be messy, but apparently the terms of service still had a seat at the table.
He Still Calls Starlink Critical
At the same time, Musk stressed that Starlink remains critical to Ukraine’s defense. He described it as the only system that cannot be jammed or blown up, at least for now. Musk warned that if Starlink were turned off, the Ukrainian front line would collapse immediately, while insisting that statement was “NOT a threat” but simply a statement of fact. He also credited Starlink with helping prevent Russia from overrunning Ukraine during the early days of the war, when other communications systems had been destroyed or jammed. Musk said SpaceX has done more to defend Ukraine than any private company on Earth “BY FAR.”
The Rhetoric Gets Hotter
Musk’s language went well beyond technical policy. He said he had “UTTER CONTEMPT” for what he called “virtue-signaling evil warmongers” who push for endless slaughter without offering a realistic solution. He ended that portion of his statement with, “May you burn in hell. End of story.” On Sunday, Musk continued calling out Ukraine for breaking Starlink’s rules. Zelensky’s complaint focused on the losses and deaths he said could follow an interruption, while Musk focused on prohibited offensive use and the distinction between Starlink and Starshield. No one can accuse this exchange of lacking heat. It has plenty, perhaps enough to power a satellite.

Correct.

Starshield, a different system, is controlled by the US government. What they decide to do is up to them.
