A Simple Public Safety Question

Democratic Socialists of America National Political Committee member Frances Gill appeared in an interview with NBC 4 Los Angeles anchor Conan Nolan, and the discussion went right to the heart of the far-left public safety agenda. Nolan pressed Gill on what “defund the police” means in practice, along with the DSA goal of getting rid of prisons and jails. Gill said, “What we really want to see is a horizon where folks are not reliant on armed enforcement to meet our public safety needs.” That sounds nice enough if you are sitting in a faculty lounge, but Nolan followed up with the kind of real-world question every parent understands: if his daughter were assaulted and raped, what agency would find the attacker and bring him to justice?

When The Talking Points Ran Out

Gill first answered, “Of course, yeah of course,” when asked whether there would be some way to seek justice. Nolan then asked the obvious follow-up: “What would it be if not police and where would he be if not a jail?” That is where the wheels came off the utopian wagon. Gill said, “So I guess I really want to avoid getting caught into these hypotheticals and talk about the reality that we’re actually facing right now.” Calling rape and punishment a “hypothetical” is not exactly reassuring to families who expect government to protect the innocent and remove violent criminals from the streets. The question was not complicated. If you abolish police and prisons, what happens to rapists?

Defund Police, Abolish Prisons, Then What?

This is the problem with radical slogans. They fit on a protest sign, but they fall apart the moment someone asks how they work after lunch. Gill affirmed that the DSA website goal includes defunding police and getting rid of prisons and jails, according to the interview described in the source material. Yet when asked what replaces those institutions in a case involving rape, she shifted away from the direct question. Americans can debate reforms, budgets, and accountability all day long, but most sane people still understand that violent offenders must be found, tried, and, when convicted, kept away from the public. That is not extremism. That is civilization doing the bare minimum.

The Student Debt Side Note

During the same interview, Gill also discussed having more than $500,000 in student loan debt. In a separate clip, she argued that highly educated people were promised a path of economic success but are instead facing “this huge downward mobility problem,” while saying society’s scales are tipped to benefit the rich. That is quite a number to bring into a conversation about who should be trusted with big public policy choices. Half a million dollars in student loans is not pocket change. If the same political movement wants to remake policing, prisons, and the economy, voters have every right to ask hard questions before handing over the keys.
