DeSantis Sounds the Alarm
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis issued a grim warning after Tuesday night’s projected midterm results showed Democrats taking control of both chambers of Congress. On X, DeSantis wrote that Democrats would get 55 Senate seats and more than 250 House seats. He said the Senate map, combined with such a large House margin, made it very unlikely Republicans would recapture Congress in 2028. His blunt assessment was that the GOP might not have another shot at Senate control until 2032.
Projected Numbers Show a Massive GOP Setback
A New York Times graphic showed Democrats leading or winning 54 Senate seats, with two more races listed as tossups. Republicans were projected to hold 44 seats. In the House, Democrats were projected to lead or win 254 seats, compared with 172 for Republicans, with nine races still unsettled. NBC estimates circulating late Tuesday pointed to a narrower Democratic House total of about 248 seats to 187 for Republicans, while Decision Desk HQ and other outlets had already called the chamber for Democrats. The exact totals remained unsettled, but every projection pointed in the same direction: Republicans were facing a defeat far larger than the bare margin needed for Democratic control.
Losses Reached Deep Republican Territory
The Senate picture was especially troubling because several reported flips came in states Republicans have long counted on. In Iowa, Democrat Josh Turek defeated Republican Ashley Hinson for the seat held by retiring Sen. Joni Ernst. Other reported Democratic gains included South Carolina, where Annie Andrews defeated appointed Sen. Darline Graham, and Maine, where Troy Jackson defeated longtime Sen. Susan Collins. Kansas, Ohio, Texas, and North Carolina were also listed among the states with Democratic flips. If confirmed, those results would go beyond losses in traditional Democratic strongholds and signal serious damage in territory Republicans have relied on to build congressional majorities. The figures remained estimates rather than certified final results, but they show why DeSantis sees a long road back for the GOP.
