Democrats rushed to play the victim card
Virginia Democrats wasted no time turning an FBI raid on Senate President Pro Tem L. Louise Lucas into a fresh round of Trump-bashing, even though the facts appear to be moving in the opposite direction. Lucas’s Portsmouth office and cannabis dispensary were searched by federal agents, and the usual chorus started up right away about “political prosecution” and abuse of power. That is rich coming from the same crowd that spent years cheering every lawfare stunt aimed at Donald Trump. The left loves due process until the target is one of their own, then suddenly every search warrant is treated like the end of democracy. Spare us the drama. If the government has evidence, let it be shown. If it does not, then people should not be smeared. But Democrats seem far more interested in blaming Trump than waiting for facts.
The probe reportedly began under Biden
The detail that matters most is the one Democrats would rather bury under a pile of talking points. Multiple reports say the investigation into Lucas began during Joe Biden’s administration, not Trump’s. The Associated Press reported that a source said the probe was opened under Biden. NOTUS reported that the case was financial in nature and started before Trump returned to office. The New York Times also described the origin in similar terms and pointed to possible corruption and bribery concerns. So much for the instant narrative. It turns out a federal investigation did not magically appear because Trump sneezed in the Oval Office. The timeline matters, and the timeline is not doing Democrats any favors. In other words, this is what happens when the facts show up and ruin the script.
Virginia Democrats blame Trump anyway
Attorney General Jay Jones, who has already made headlines for all the wrong reasons, tried to lecture everyone about restraint while tossing shade at Trump and what he called failed prosecutions of political enemies. Rep. Bobby Scott also jumped in, claiming the raid fit into a broader pattern of Trump abusing the Justice Department. House Speaker Don Scott Jr. said Lucas had not been charged with anything and warned that people should not jump to conclusions, which is fair enough, but he also blamed an FBI and Justice Department he says are politicized by Trump. Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell took the same path, accusing Trump of targeting Virginia because voters backed Kamala Harris in 2024. That is a bold claim, considering the best evidence so far points to an investigation that started before Trump was back in charge. The outrage machine is working overtime, but the facts are still the boss.
Due process should apply to everyone
Lucas is an influential figure in Virginia politics, and like anyone else she deserves due process and the presumption of innocence. That should not be a controversial statement, though in today’s Washington circus it somehow is. If there is wrongdoing, it should be investigated fully and fairly. If there is not, then the public deserves to know that too. What should not happen is a rush to turn every federal action into a Trump conspiracy just because the left has a habit of seeing him under every rock and behind every filing cabinet. Conservatives should want the truth, not a political show. And if Democrats are so eager to talk about weaponized government, they might start by remembering who spent years cheering it on when it was aimed at the other side.
