President Trump announced Friday that CNN, MSNOW, and Politico would be barred from the White House. He said the decision followed their constant reporting of what he called “FAKE NEWS,” and he warned that other media outlets could be next. Trump also criticized MSNOW’s change from MSNBC, claiming it reflected a lack of viewership and credibility. He attacked Politico over what he described as an illegal and ridiculous $8 million subscription paid directly by the United States government during the Biden administration. Trump said the payment was meant to keep the outlet alive and added, “Seems like corruption to me!” He argued that media outlets should not be able to publish what he called fiction and lies while covering the president, his administration, or the country. The announcement turned another press complaint into a direct fight over who controls access to the White House.

CNN Calls the Ban an Attack on Press Rights

CNN responded Friday afternoon by saying it fully supports its White House team and its fair and accurate reporting. The network argued that the U.S. Constitution protects its right to report without hindrance or interference from the government. CNN added that if the threatened ban goes forward, it would be an illegal assault on that constitutionally protected right. The statement raised the possibility of legal action, though its wording remained conditional rather than announcing that a lawsuit had already been filed. CNN’s position is clear: the network views the dispute as more than a lost press credential or a temporary access fight. It is presenting the matter as a constitutional challenge to the government’s treatment of a news organization.

Earlier AP Case Put White House Access in Court

The dispute also follows a recent fight involving the Associated Press. Last year, the AP filed a lawsuit after its reporters were barred from certain White House spaces and press pool events because the organization refused to adopt the renaming of the “Gulf of America.” The D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals later ruled 2-1 that President Trump could bar the AP from the Oval Office. That ruling does not automatically decide CNN’s dispute, but it shows that White House access has already become a courtroom battle, not merely a war of statements between officials and reporters.
