WATCH: Sydney Sweeney Straps Herself to an Airplane — Then It Goes Upside Down

Just when you thought Sydney Sweeney had generated enough headlines simply by putting on a pair of jeans, she decided to strap herself to the top of a biplane and go flying upside down over the English countryside. Yes, literally. The 28-year-old Euphoria star went wing-walking near Headcorn, England, where she was secured upright to the top wing of a biplane while the pilot performed barrel rolls and a full loop. And while most normal human beings would be reconsidering every life decision that led them to being attached to the outside of an airplane, Sweeney was smiling, laughing and filming herself like she was riding the Ferris wheel at the county fair. She eventually posted the video for her millions of Instagram followers with a message aimed at Hollywood’s reigning king of doing insane things for our entertainment: “Watch out, Tom Cruise.” The official Top Gun Instagram account responded, “Feel the need for speed.” Somewhere, Tom Cruise is presumably looking for a rocket he can strap himself to.

Apparently She Really Is an Adrenaline Junkie

The people who actually put Sweeney on top of the airplane say there was at least a little bit of normal human behavior before takeoff. Michael Pickin, director and pilot at The Wing Walk Company, told the BBC that Sweeney was “a bit apprehensive at first,” which is comforting because it confirms she does possess the basic survival instincts the rest of us received at birth. But Pickin ultimately described her as “an adrenaline junkie at heart,” and the video certainly backs that up. Once they were airborne, there was Sweeney hanging above the fuselage as the aircraft rolled and looped through the sky, grinning through the whole thing. And because apparently one celebrity strapped to an airplane wasn’t enough for the afternoon, Sweeney’s partner, Scooter Braun, reportedly did a simultaneous wing walk on a second biplane. Folks, I remember when a romantic getaway meant dinner, a bottle of wine and maybe a nice hotel. Evidently Hollywood dating has advanced to synchronized aerial death-defying stunts.

There’s Something Refreshing About Sydney Sweeney

Here’s where the story gets a little more interesting than another celebrity doing something crazy for Instagram. Sydney Sweeney has somehow become one of the most talked-about women in American pop culture without constantly telling Americans what they’re supposed to think. She’s been dragged into political and cultural arguments she didn’t necessarily ask to join, most famously after her American Eagle jeans campaign became the subject of one of those ridiculous Internet controversies that only makes sense if you spend approximately 19 hours a day online. People argued about beauty standards, “good jeans,” “good genes,” race, politics and whatever else they could cram into a blue-jeans advertisement. Sweeney largely did something increasingly rare in celebrity culture: she kept going. Now she’s flying upside down strapped to an airplane. Maybe that’s why so many ordinary people seem to like her. She appears to be having fun rather than lecturing everybody else about how they’re living their lives.

No, That Doesn’t Make Her MAGA

Before anybody starts ordering Sydney Sweeney 2028 bumper stickers, let’s be clear about something. I am not claiming Sydney Sweeney is secretly conservative, MAGA, Republican or preparing to become Trump’s next press secretary. That’s exactly the kind of nonsense that turns harmless celebrity stories into political food fights. What I find interesting is the reaction to her. Conservative audiences in particular seem to have developed an affection for Sweeney because she represents something that has become surprisingly unusual in Hollywood: a beautiful young actress who appears comfortable being a beautiful young actress, doesn’t apologize for it and isn’t constantly using every microphone shoved in front of her to deliver a political sermon. Sometimes people just want their movie stars to make movies, sell some jeans and occasionally strap themselves to the top of an airplane. Apparently we’ve lowered the bar so far that this now feels revolutionary.

Maybe Hollywood Should Pay Attention

There may actually be a lesson here for an entertainment industry that has spent years wondering why so many Americans stopped paying attention. People aren’t necessarily demanding that every actor become conservative. They aren’t demanding Republican movies or MAGA television shows. Most people would probably settle for entertainment that doesn’t treat them like idiots who need to be politically reeducated between commercial breaks. Sweeney’s appeal seems to cut through that mess. She’s glamorous without acting embarrassed about glamour, playful without appearing manufactured and increasingly willing to do things that make people say, “Wait, she actually did that?” That’s basically the old Hollywood formula: be interesting. Somehow we turned that into a radical concept.

Jimmy’s Take

I like Sydney Sweeney, and not because I’ve decided she’s secretly sitting around reading conservative websites between takes. I like her because she seems to understand something Hollywood forgot: people enjoy celebrities who are actually enjoyable. She didn’t turn this stunt into a lecture about climate change, patriarchy, democracy or the upcoming election. She strapped herself to an airplane, went upside down, laughed her head off and told Tom Cruise he’d better watch his back. That’s fun. Remember fun? We used to have quite a bit of it in this country. And maybe the funniest part is that simply being attractive, entertaining, unapologetic and seemingly uninterested in constantly scolding half the country has turned Sydney Sweeney into something of a cultural rebel. Keep flying, Sydney. Although perhaps next time you can just sit inside the airplane like the rest of us cowards.
