A Tense Weekend Around Iran
The weekend brought a series of developments that made the situation around Iran look anything but routine. President Trump cut his trip to Camp David short on Saturday night and returned to the White House aboard Marine One. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also ended his U.S. trip early, canceled a planned visit to Texas, and flew back to Israel. Iran issued a “Code 100,” described as the highest alert level for all of its armed forces. At the same time, a U.S. Air Force B-1B bomber loaded with munitions took off from RAF Fairford in Britain, while Saudi Arabia began launching strikes in Yemen.
Trump Says He Is in “Deciding Mode”
On Sunday morning, Trump spoke with Fox News Chief Foreign Correspondent Trey Yingst about the rapidly developing conflict. Trump said he was in a “deciding mode” and that “very big things” would happen in the not-so-distant future regarding Iran. He then laid out three possible paths: wiping Iran out, allowing it to rot economically, or making a deal. According to Yingst, Trump also described the question on his mind this way: “if and when do I blow the entire nation up? They’d better behave.” He did not announce which option he would choose, but he made clear that he was weighing a major decision.
Negotiations Are Still Possible
Even while discussing severe consequences, Trump said he would probably be open to meeting Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. That possibility came after the Iranian regime sent a list of demands intended to end the war. A meeting could take place during this week’s United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York, which Trump is scheduled to attend. The picture coming from the president’s remarks is one of pressure and negotiation happening at the same time. Tehran is being warned about the consequences of continued conflict, while a face-to-face meeting remains on the table.
The Houthis Add Another Complication
Trump also told Yingst that he was in “constant communication” with the Iranian-backed Houthis. He said the group had agreed not to fight the United States. That claim adds another layer to an already unsettled situation involving Iran, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and American military forces. The comments came as the region saw heightened alerts, canceled travel plans, military aircraft movements, and strikes in Yemen. With Trump saying that major developments may be close, the next diplomatic or military move could quickly change the direction of the conflict.
