CNN Said It Would Not Cover Trump, Then Arrived
The media fight started before President Trump’s late-night Truth Social post. CNN had been barred from the White House press pool for Trump’s trip to New York, while major television outlets, including CNN and Fox News, suspended coverage for the TV pool. CNN still appeared at the United Nations General Assembly. When Trump saw Kaitlan Collins, he highlighted the contradiction: “I’m surprised that CNN is here covering me. You shouldn’t be here.” The network’s decision to show up after saying it would not cover him gave Trump a ready-made target, and he did not leave the joke unused.
Trump Keeps Pressing the Point
Trump brought up CNN again during a meeting with Andy Burnham. Asked about the exclusion of CNN, MS Now, and Politico, he noted that the outlets had said they would not be there, then came anyway. “By the way, they said they weren’t going to be here, but they came,” Trump said. He followed with a question about whether they would also be with President Xi the next day. The message was clear: CNN’s stated decision not to cover Trump did not survive contact with the actual event. In Washington, apparently, even a media blackout can come with a travel itinerary.
Late-Night Post Unloads on CNN
Later, while flying back to Washington on Air Force One, Trump broadened his attack to the other outlets he described as “SLEAZEBAGS.” He accused them of “ranting and raving like Lunatics” in the United Nations press area. He singled out Collins as a “Third Rate ‘Reporter’” and called her a “truly unhappy person.” Trump also claimed she, CNN, and MSDNC have a “TRUMP” addiction, then called them “sick, treasonous, and demented.” Those are Trump’s words and insults, but there was no mistaking the target of his midnight message: the outlets that said they would stay away and then showed up.
Judge Tim Kelly Enters the Argument
Trump’s post did not stop with the press. He praised what he called a “great, for them, and totally disloyal Judge,” identifying District Court Judge Tim Kelly. Trump pointed to Kelly as the same Trump appointee who ruled for Jim Acosta and CNN in a lawsuit after Trump banned CNN during his first term. The judge’s earlier ruling became part of Trump’s broader complaint about press access, legal challenges, and the media’s determination to keep covering him. The courtroom battle and the press pool dispute are now part of the same ongoing conflict in Trump’s telling.
Parody Video Piles On
Trump followed the post with a parody social media video billed as “a day in the life of a CNN reporter.” It opens with the creator saying, “My life as someone who tells lies all day long,” before getting out of bed and preparing for work. The mock reporter puts on a “fake news outfit,” says the character cannot wait to make up false rumors about Trump, and then announces, “Let’s go bash Trump 24/7.” It is a short, deliberately exaggerated sketch, but it fits the president’s broader argument that CNN is not simply covering him. In Trump’s telling, the network is obsessed with him.
