Ramirez Calls for Abolishing ICE
Rep. Delia Ramirez (D-Ill.) said she is introducing legislation to abolish U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and dismantle the Department of Homeland Security. According to CBS, the proposal would redirect those funds to additional social services. The plan would eliminate ICE and dismantle DHS while redirecting the money elsewhere.
Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) used the exchange to promote his own legislation.
Gill Puts Birthright Citizenship on the Table
Gill promoted his My Citizenship Act, which he says would end birthright citizenship for children of parents who entered the country illegally. In a post on X, he argued that Ramirez’s position showed why birthright citizenship should end, saying it could empower people with no loyalty to America to dismantle the country from within.
Ramirez Fires Back With “Latina Power”
Ramirez responded on X by calling Gill’s bill “unconstitutional” and writing, “It’s called Latina Power, Brandon!” She also told him to learn how to legislate. Her response sharpened the dispute over immigration, national identity, and who gets to define American power.
Gill Says American Power Comes First
Gill answered with a longer response centered on what he called “American Power.” He wrote that this means the country must be able to control who enters and that “the golden ticket of citizenship should belong to Americans first and Americans only.”
Gill also invoked Ramirez’s family history. According to the report, her parents crossed the border illegally from Guatemala while her mother was pregnant with her. Gill wrote that they “showed no regard for our nation or its laws” and added, “You should be beyond grateful that a legal loophole allowed you to enjoy the fruits of a first-world nation.”
He accused Ramirez of working to end immigration enforcement while telling “actual Americans” that their birthright did not belong to them. He also said she proudly considered herself Guatemalan before being a citizen of America.
The exchange made the policy divide clear: Ramirez is seeking to abolish ICE and dismantle DHS, while Gill is calling for tighter immigration controls and an end to birthright citizenship for children of parents who entered the country illegally.
