Nancy Mace Debuts ‘Get Maced’ With Tattoos on Full Display

Mace Takes Her Next Act to YouTube

Outgoing Republican Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina is already moving toward life after Congress, and her next stop is YouTube. Mace has launched a new political and current-affairs program called “Get Maced,” giving her a public platform as her House term winds down in January. She has previously said she will return to the private sector, but for now she is stepping into the media lane, where opinions are plentiful and microphones are cheaper than campaign ads. The show’s debut also drew attention because Mace appeared in sleeveless outfits that showed extensive tattoos on both arms.

The Tattoos Tell Part of Her Story

Mace, 48, revealed earlier this year that she had received nine tattoos during a rough stretch in her personal and professional life. That period included the end of her engagement and the departure of several members of her congressional staff. She has said the tattoos were part of reclaiming her identity after traumatic experiences, stating earlier this year, “So my story is I am totally broken,” and “I have PTSD over what I’ve been through.” Mace has also spoken publicly about being the victim of rape and about difficulties in her relationship with her father. Until recently, she had mostly kept the tattoos covered in public, but her new show displays artwork that includes the word “Justice,” a lion, a large bird, and other designs.

South Carolina Politics Has Already Shifted

The launch comes after Mace’s unsuccessful run for governor of South Carolina. She finished fifth in the Republican primary, while state Attorney General Alan Wilson went on to win the GOP nomination. After the death of Sen. Lindsey Graham last month, Mace briefly considered entering the race for his Senate seat before deciding not to run. She has since endorsed fellow Republican Rep. Ralph Norman. That is a lot of political movement in a short window, but this is South Carolina politics, where the tea is sweet and the campaigns are rarely boring.

Mace Keeps Pressing on Islam in Politics

Mace has also increased her criticism of what she describes as the growing influence of Islam in American politics. Last week, she said, “Every single Muslim holding public office in America is a Trojan horse, and a threat to both national security and our republic,” adding, “We refuse to be silent.” She also posted about an imam in Alabama and said Islam “must be confronted” and “removed from civil society in the US.” Democratic Rep. Pramila Jayapal responded by calling the remarks “absolutely disgusting and dangerous” and said Republicans should denounce what she described as “blatant Islamophobia.” So yes, the new show arrives with Mace already deep in a national fight over religion, politics, and free speech.
