Judge Throws Out the Subpoenas

What the Judge Said About the Political Fight

Schiltz wrote that President Trump and members of his administration have repeatedly targeted sanctuary jurisdictions, including places that limit the use of local resources to help federal immigration enforcement. He also noted Trump’s repeated criticism of Minnesota and its Somali population, his targeting of Democratic-led cities for expanded deportation efforts, and his warnings that officials who oppose National Guard deployments for immigration work could face jail. The ruling does not end the larger political battle over immigration enforcement, but it does block one round of subpoenas that had put Minnesota’s top officials squarely in the spotlight.
