A Fishing Trip Turns Fatal
A 71-year-old fisherman was killed Friday at Dr. Bradford Memorial Park in Winter Garden, near Orlando, Florida. The attack happened in a tributary connected to Lake Apopka, according to the reported details. Witnesses said a 12-foot alligator grabbed the man by the leg and dragged him into the water. He had just caught a large fish and was lifting it for photographs when the attack occurred. The loss is devastating, and the account serves as a sober reminder that Florida’s waterways can carry serious danger, even during an ordinary fishing trip.
Witnesses Describe the Attack
People who witnessed the scene told local WFTV what they saw. Their account was that the alligator seized the fisherman as he raised the fish, then dragged him into the water. The sequence unfolded in the lake-connected tributary, leaving witnesses to describe a gruesome and deeply upsetting death. Because no name for the victim was provided in the report, the focus remains on the facts available: a fisherman was attacked, taken into the water, and later recovered by officials. For his loved ones, this was a heartbreaking loss.

Lake Apopka’s Warning Signs
Residents and other witnesses said alligators are commonly seen in the area. One man pointed to Lake Apopka at sunset and described seeing alligators everywhere, saying there are “thousands of gators” in the lake. He also said it was definitely not a place where he would put his paddleboard. That warning gives important context to the attack. The witnesses described a waterway where large alligators are a familiar sight, which makes caution around the shoreline and water especially important.
Officials Recover the Victim
After the attack, officials recovered the victim’s body from the lake. A nuisance alligator trapper later captured an 11-foot-8-inch alligator from the area. The report describes the attacking animal as 12 feet long, while the captured alligator was measured at 11 feet 8 inches. The available account does not say that the captured animal was definitively identified as the one involved in the death, so those details should not be treated as the same fact. What is clear is that a very large alligator was taken from the area after a fisherman lost his life there.
