In the days since the school shooting that took place in Uvalde, Texas, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) fired back after a British journalist attempted to taunt him by mocking “American exceptionalism.”
Cruz has just wrapped up a press conference where the GOP governor of Texas, Greg Abbott had spoken about the incident that took place when the argument with Mark Stone from Sky News took place.
“Is this the moment to reform gun laws?” Stone posited of Cruz.
“you know, it’s easy to go to politics,” Cruz responded.
Not speaking on any of the other issues that surround mass shootings, such as mental illness in the shooter, Stone went on to insist, “But it’s important. It’s at the heart of the issue.”
“I get that that’s where the media likes to go,” responded Cruz.
“But it’s not. It’s where many of the people we’ve talked to here like to go,” exclaimed Stone.
“The proposals from Democrats and the media inevitably, when some violent psychopath murders people —” started Cruz.
“A violent psychopath is able to get a weapon so easily,” interrupted Stone. “Eighteen-year old with two AR-15s.”
“If you want to stop violent crime, the proposals the Democrats have — none of them would have stopped this,” highlighted Cruz in his statements.
It was at this point that Stone pivoted his statements to start attacking America: “But why does this only happen in your country? I really think that’s what many people around the world, just — they cannot fathom why only in America? Why is this American exceptionalism so awful?”
“You know, I’m sorry you think American exceptionalism is awful,” answered Cruz.
“This aspect of it. This aspect of it,” stated Stone.
“You know what? You’ve got your political agenda. God love you,” Stated Cruz dismissively before walking out.
Stone proceeded to chase after Cruz, yelling, “I just want to understand why you do not think that guns are the problem,” before exclaiming, “It is just an American problem, sir.”
Another woman nearby seemed to jump in and echoed, “Mr. Cruz, why is America the only country that faces this kind of mass shooting?”
Now with comrades, Stone chimed in once again “You can’t answer that.” before starting to parrot his own statement over and over “You can’t answer that. You can’t answer that, can you sir? You can’t answer that.”
Seeming entirely done with dealing with the reporter, Cruz shot back, “Why is it that people come from all over the world to America? Because it’s the freest, most prosperous, safest country on Earth. And stop being a propagandist.”
"Why only in America?"
