In a fiery retort, The White House launched back criticisms at the claim made by Nancy Pelosi, the current Speaker of the House, that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) could declare, once again, its ban on all evictions, which has been in effect since the beginning of the entire COVID-19 pandemic.
After weathering the intense barrage of criticisms aimed at her from multiple House progressives, some of whom even camped out on the steps of the United States Capitol once the House had left for its summer recess, Pelosi, who had failed in her attempt to gather the required number of votes needed to extend the eviction moratorium via legislation this past Friday, called for the aid of the CDC to force an extension of the ban.
“The CDC has the power to extend the eviction moratorium. As they double down on masks, why wouldn’t they extend the moratorium in light of delta variant?” tweeted out Pelosi this past Sunday.
It is a moral imperative to keep people from being put out in the street which also contributes to the public health emergency.
The virus is still a threat, the moratorium must be extended and the funds Congress allocated to assist renters and landlords must be spent.

“It is a moral imperative to keep people from being put out in the street which also contributes to the public health emergency. The virus is still a threat, the moratorium must be extended and the funds Congress allocated to assist renters and landlords must be spent,” she exclaimed.
However, back in June, the Supreme Court made the decision that the moratorium issued by the CDC was entirely unconstitutional and gave Congress until the 31st of July to fix the issue via legislation. Pelosi, who is the current leader of the House, stated that she only found out about the pending issue on Friday and was not able to gather enough votes, even among her democrats, to reach the level needed to pass an extension before the Houses summer recess.
Uncle Joe’s White House, through the mouthpiece of press secretary Jen Psaki, talked about Pelosi’s claims in a statement this past Monday, Psaki told the speaker that the CDC has absolutely no lawful way of extending her moratorium and, while Uncle Joe and the White House could possibly assist, it cannot just issue a blanket order to end the evictions.
The officials for the CDC, stated Psaki, “have been unable to find legal authority for a new, targeted eviction moratorium,” and that there is unlikely to be an “emergency extension,” as reported by The Hill.
“Our team is redoubling efforts to identify all available legal authorities to provide necessary protections,” added Psaki. “In the meantime, the President will continue to do everything in his power to help renters from eviction.”
Even so, it is currently not clear that Old Uncle Joe has the authority to extend the CDC’s mandate whatsoever. The Supreme Court was very clear that the issue was entirely a legislative one, and any mistake in the calendar is entirely Pelosi’s fault, not Biden’s.
