This past Sunday, the recently elected Congresswoman Mayra Flores (R-TX) issued a response to a video clip showing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi apparently elbowing her daughter to the side while the swearing-in ceremony for Flores was taking place on Tuesday.
Flores’ accomplishment was that she managed to officially flip the seat for the 34th Congressional District of Texas, which has historically been cemented as a Democratic seat, via a special election that happened on the 15th of June in order to fill the now-empty seat from the departure of former Congressman Filemon Vela (D-TX) in the wake of their resigning for a new job with a law firm. She was officially worn in on the 21st of June, but a clip showing Pelosi shoving her daughter with her elbow did not crop up on social media until it spread like crazy over the weekend.
James Woods, a well-known actor, shared the video clip that was tagged with a statement of his own, tweeting, “I love this princess stood her ground, while Nancy showed her true colors.”

Flores seemed to be in agreeance with the assessment from Woods, stating, “I am so proud of my strong, beautiful daughter for not allowing this to faze her. She continued to smile and pose for the picture like a Queen. No child should be pushed to the side for a photo op. PERIOD!!”

The video in question sported Pelosi waving her hands around as she was speaking before turning to see Flores’ daughter next to her. She then dropped her elbow down and used it to push the small girl out of the way. The young girl seemed entirely unfazed by the rude shove, just smiling it away and sliding back into her original spot as Pelosi turned back around and moved her arms away.
When Flores took the win in the special election, she cemented her spot in history as the very first Mexican-born American woman to hold a seat in Congress. Additionally, due to only being elected to carry out the last few months of the remaining term for Vela, she will need to stay in campaign mode in order to defend her seat throughout the midterm elections slated to take place in November.
This win from Flores has already ended up making waves as Bill Maher used her victory as an example of proof that Democrats were starting to quickly lose ground with the people they had previously done well with.
“The campaign manager for the losing Democrat said, ‘We gave up a reliably Democratic Congressional seat for no reason at all. We deserve to know why.’ Well, aside from your terrible attitude, I’m going to tell you why,” stated Maher. “Because these voters stopped seeing your candidate as their lawyer. That’s why. Their message to you was, ‘I’m an American now. I’m here. Be my lawyer, not the lawyer for the migrants showing up in my backyard.'”
