Library In New York Hosts Event Targeting Young Teens Trying To ‘Learn The Art Of Drag’

A library situated in an upstate New York county hosted this past June a series of four events in which eleven to eighteen-year-old kids would have the chance to “learn the art of drag from a local drag queen.”

Located in Ithaca, New York, the Tompkins County Public Library played host to a series of four events that took place on June 6th, June 13th, June 20th, and June 27th.

“Participants will learn about costuming, makeup, lip synching, stage presence, and more,” bragged the library, calling for, “Students will be best served by attending all classes in the series, as each week will address a different aspect of performing drag.”

Then, to bring the youth even further into the drag lifestyle, the library tried to offer, “Everyone who finishes the series will have the opportunity to perform at a youth drag show on Saturday, July 2nd on The Commons as a part of the Downtown Ithaca Pride Festival.”

It was highlighted during the Downtown Ithaca Pride Festival about the July 2nd event, “Hosted by Vivian Darling, partnered with Tompkins County Public Library LGBTQIA+ Youth Programming attendees, coordinated by TCPL Youth Programming.”

The Tompkins County Public Library 2022 Budget Summary highlighted that the library would end up getting almost 83% of its budget from Tompkins County with over $3,618,972 officially approved out of the grand total budget of $4,347,355.

Ithaca has also highlighted a “community organization” labeled “Ithaca Drag Story Hour,” which stated, “Drag Story Hour Ithaca is just what it sounds like—drag performers reading stories to children in libraries, schools, and bookstores!”

The heavy emphasis surrounding drag queens throughout the public libraries of New York has also been strongly championed by the New York City Public Library, which also claims on its website, “Watch: Drag Queen Story Hour. No matter the circumstances, we’re here to help bring the joy of books to our youngest readers.”

Drag Story Hour NYC brags:

Drag Story Hour NYC (formerly Drag Queen Story Hour NYC) produces storytelling and creative arts programs for children and teens, presented by local drag artists, in libraries, schools, and other community spaces in all five boroughs of New York City, and virtually. Through fun and fabulous educational experiences, our programs celebrate gender diversity and all forms of difference to build empathy and give kids the confidence to express themselves however they feel comfortable.
