LGBTQ Activists And Elected Dems Pour Out To Protest The NYC Appearance For Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis

A decently sized crowd of LGBTQ activists that was speckled with the elected Democrat New York officials rounded themselves up at Chelsea Piers in New York City in an attempt to try and protest the conference appearance of  Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis this past Sunday.

These protestors sported banners and signs that shouted out for the boycotting of the area, seemingly angry about the recent signing by the governor of the Parental Rights in Education bill that blocks the instruction of topics such as gender identity and sexual orientation to children between the grades of kindergarten and 3rd grade.

Sen. Brad Hoylman, a Democrat out of New York state, also attempted to use social media to complain about the governor’s appearance at the event.

As #LGBTQ elected officials we demand @ChelseaPiersNYC cancel the event with “Don’t Say Gay” Florida Governor @RonDeSantisFL during #pridemonth2022 in Chelsea, the heart of our community,” he stated via a tweet.

As reported by The New York Post, the event was hosted by the Tikvah Fund, a Jewish group.

“Local pols who attended the Sunday demonstration included US Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D- Upper East Side), State Sen. Brad Hoylman (D- Lower Manhattan), Assemblywoman Yuh-Line Niou (D- Chinatown), and Lt. Gov. contender Ana María Archila,” highlighted the outlet.

Along with the protesting of DeSantis concerning the Parental Rights in Education law, quite a few made the argument that the governor should not be allowed to speak at any events during Pride Month.

A statement was released by Chelsea Piers this past Friday speaking about those opposed to the policies of the governor, despite it continuing to host the ongoing event.

“Over the past 24 years, Pier Sixty has hosted hundreds of influential and notable events that span the spectrum of social and political issues. Pier Sixty has never controlled the content, program or speakers at these events,” as stated in a release.

“Having said that, we could not disagree more strongly with many of Ron DeSantis’ actions in office. One response to abhorrent behavior is to counter it with positive action. Accordingly, Pier Sixty will direct every dollar it receives from Tikvah to groups that protect LGBTQ+ communities and foster and amplify productive debates about LGBTQ+ issues,” it stated.

Even though there was quite a large and vocal group of protesters gathered around the venue this past Sunday, DeSantis’ popularity has continued to grow with Americans across the country.
