President Joe Biden has issued a statement that has banned all federal immigration agencies and officers from using terms such as “alien,” “assimilation,” and “illegal alien” in all official statements and documents.
This past Monday, the Biden administration sent out a memo that went over a set of changes in a move that is partly a rebuke of former President Donald Trump’s policies on immigration issues, as reported by The Washington Post. The memo is a piece of a much larger effort to push back and dismantle Trump’s immigration policies.
The document demands immigration officials to make changes in rhetoric like substituting “noncitizen or migrant” in the place of “alien,” “undocumented” in place of “illegal,” and “integration” in place of “assimilation.”
“In response to the vision set by the Administration, ICE will ensure agency communications use the preferred terminology and inclusive language,” Tae Johnson, acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), stated in a memo.
These memos show a clear statement to immigration officials and officers who showed support to Trump that Biden is now the one in charge of all immigration policies, and that these immigration officials should behave accordingly, reported The Washington Post.
“As the nation’s premier law enforcement agency, we set a tone and example for our country and partners across the world,” Troy Miller, head of Customs and Border Patrol (CBP), stated in another memo. “We enforce our nation’s laws while also maintaining the dignity of every individual with whom we interact. The words we use matter and will serve to further confer that dignity to those in our custody.”
Biden has made decisions that have shifted the United States’ plans for immigration from the Trump and Obama administrations, placing focus on processing illegal immigrants and letting them pass freely into the country versus deporting and blocking said illegal immigrants.
Ever since Biden took office, there has been an absurd number of illegal immigrants who have flooded towards the United States southern border with the hopes of gaining entry to the United States. Many of these immigrants flooding in directly make mention that Biden’s election was the catalyzing factor in their decision to make the trek.
In statements this past Saturday, Biden finally referred to the situation at the southern border as a “crisis”. This is a notable shift in the rhetoric of his administration as Democrats have been pointedly avoiding using the term in relation to the border issues. The White House staff have downplayed Biden’s remarks and claimed that the president’s use of the word “crisis” does not reflect a change in the administration’s position on the border.
